I think (having nursed two babies without supplementing, while working part time - I had a lot of little bottles of breast milk in the freezer) that the basic problem in supporting breastfeeding mothers is that other countries base their health plans on keeping people healthy. Our country bases our health plans on making money. That’s why we see minimal maternal leave and almost no paternal leave, compared to European countries.

Great post. I hate how discussions of breastfeeding always comes down to women getting defensive about their “choices”. It’s not really a true choice if we don’t actually do everything we can to support breastfeeding on a societal level. When we turn it into a discussion of individual choices we lose the perspective on what we really need to do to support women. That’s true about a lot of issues though, we can’t talk about them as systemic issues rather than an individual ones. Interestingly in relation to the quote above, I had a baby in the NICU for weeks and while they advocated strongly for breast milk, they discouraged breast feeding. They provided pumps in hospital but didn’t really want you to nurse because they couldn’t measure it. I was an experienced breast feeder and really had to push for it. I would nurse but then she didn’t want to take the full bottle of breast milk they insisted on top of it. Finally a LC simply weighed her before and after nursing and she was getting the exact amount they wanted and they let me just nurse when with her. Most of the women did not leave nursing though, and I remember the nurses collecting formula samples for one young mom who needed it until her WIC kicked in. They should have provided her with breastfeeding support or at least a pump! I hope things have changed since then. I nursed 3 babies into toddlerhood. It’s a really tough job. Each one had their own challenges and took a lot of work… work that is never compensated or even acknowledged really. I never look down on anyone who doesn’t breastfeed but I do feel very angry that we set women up for failure.
